The sketch starts with your life, not my portfolio.
I am Mwangi Karanja, a BORAQS-registered architect based in the vibrant heart of Nairobi. My journey in architecture began with a simple observation: too many buildings in East Africa try to belong somewhere else.
I believe our architecture should belong specifically to our unique climate, our diverse people, and this momentous century. Whether I'm sketching the first line for a family home or a commercial hub, the focus is never on vanity; it's on creating a grounded sanctuary that works for you.
Quiet Authority in Kenyan Architecture.
I design buildings for specific places and specific people. My interest is in buildings that could only be here — responsive to Nairobi's sun angles, its rainfall patterns, its materials, and the way families use space in East Africa. Not buildings copied from a European design magazine.
Architecture is opaque to most people who need it. I don't think it has to be. I show my process — the rough sketches, the constraints, the decisions that shaped each building. Not because it makes for good content, but because you deserve to understand what you are paying for.
Building for the Diaspora.
Investing in property from thousands of miles away can be daunting. I bridge that gap with radical transparency — you know where your money is going, what the site looks like today, and what happens next.
- Rigorous site supervision on an agreed schedule — with written reports after every visit.
- Weekly progress reports with photography sent directly to you — wherever you are.
- BORAQS-registered accountability — not a contractor handshake deal.
